| The primary purpose of the Alliance is to demonstrate the
potential for Fort Gordon to grow existing missions and take on new
missions, thereby strengthening its posture for the 2005 Base
Realignment and Closure (BRAC) round. Below are just a few facts and
figures that show Fort Gordon is ready to meet the mission of expansion
to house and train our troops.
1. Fort
Gordon is about 56,000 acres, or 100 square miles, primarily in Richmond
County but with small portions of Columbia, Jefferson and McDuffie
Counties. About 1000 acres are available for redevelopment within the
main cantonment area where previous structures have been removed but the
utility infrastructure and road networks remain. Fort Gordon also
manages the 1000 acre Fort Gordon Recreation Area at Clarks Hill.
2. Fort
Gordon has 233 miles of roads and about 1600 buildings.
3. The
49 maneuver training areas, 13 firing ranges, and artillery and small
arms impact areas are used extensively by active duty, National Guard
and Reserve units. About 35,000 reserve component personnel train at
Fort Gordon annually.
4. There
are currently 876 sets of family quarters on the installation which have
undergone over $21M in renovations and repairs since 1997. Under the
government housing privatization initiative (Residential Communities
Initiative - RCI), the number of family quarters could more than double
in 2005-2006.
5. There
are 7,080 barracks spaces to include a $21M 600-bed complex that opened
in 1998 and a $17.2M 288-bed complex that opened in 2000, and existing
barracks which have undergone $29M in renovations since 1998.
6. There
are 750 guest lodging spaces to include Griffith Hall, which underwent a
$2.9M renovation and reopened in 2001.
7. In
addition to the above construction and renovation projects, since 1996
over $175M worth of other projects have been completed or are currently
ongoing to include a new post exchange and shoppette ($10M), Post
Consolidated Maintenance Facility ($21M), 513th Military Intelligence
Brigade vehicle maintenance and wash facilities ($10.2M), Post
Telecommunications Facility ($10M-under constr), 93rd Signal
Brigade Maintenance Facility ($19M-under constr), Central Energy Plant
modernization ($31M-under constr), new entrance gates 1, 2 and 5 ($40M,
GA DOT funded), new warehouses ($5.3M), new central fire station
($2.8M), environmental remediation pilot program ($20M-ongoing), and
administrative/office facilities ($10).
