Columbia County schools honored by state superintendent
Two Columbia County schools were honored for two separate distinctions by the state school superintendent Monday.
Richard Woods presented a banner to students, faculty, staff and parents at Riverside Elementary School for its designation as a military flagship school by the state of Georgia. The school is the only one in the county to earn the honor, which is awarded for services and programs that cater to students of military families.
“This is not an easy banner to receive,” Woods said. “There’s a lot of qualifications that have to be met to reach this level of distinction but it is one that is definitely necessary for us as a state.”
During the ceremony, fifth-graders shared a poem inspired by their experience as children in military families. Riverside offers students the resources to help their transition to a new school such as online enrollment, a partnership with Fort Gordon and a newcomers club at the start of each semester.
This is the first year of the award, and the school is one of two in the state to hold the honor.
