Expo connects employers and jobseekers

Fort Gordon Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program, Georgia Department of Labor, and Augusta Career Center hosted its annual 2018 Veterans Job and Career Expo May 1 at the U.S. Army Reserve Center.

The expo was an opportunity for transitioning Servicemembers, veterans, and military spouses to connect with military-friendly employers.

Nearly 600 jobseekers filed made their way through the expo, which featured a total of 74 local, state, and national employers encompassing a wide range of career fields.

Angela Gaston, Transition Services specialist, SFLTAP, said the expo has proven to be a success each year with many prospective employees landing “sustainable, career enhancing, high-paying jobs while participating each year.”

Due to much of the growth within Fort Gordon and the surrounding area, some employers traveled from out of town stayed an extra day to conduct interviews and extend offers to qualified candidates.

Lockheed Martin, a global security and aerospace company headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, was one such employer.

Gaston said the company reached out to SFL-TAP three weeks prior to the expo requesting a location to conduct interviews and extend offers during the expo. Twenty-four candidates were interviewed and 19 were given offers; all 19 accepted the offers.

Gaston said that one of the reasons employers like Lockheed Martin seek to hire military personnel and spouses is because they possess “leadership and on-the-job skills obtained while in the military and supporting our communities.”

Unlike applying for a job online, expos such as this give employers and candidates opportunities to network through face-to-face interaction.

“Employers are not only interested in reviewing resumes, but are also interested in finding out whether your personality and character are just as impressive as the resume,” Gaston said.

Those who were unable to attend the expo are encouraged to attend next month’s event.

The next hiring fair will be held during the Fort Gordon National Transition Summit at Gordon’s Conference and Catering center June 21-22. Service members who are 12 to 18 months from separating from the military are required to attend the summit. The event will feature a workshop for military spouses, so they are encouraged to attend as well. Registration is required and should be completed at www.hiringourheroes.org/ events.
