Letter to the Editor: Congrats to Deal and Cross

We often forget the term “public servants” when discussing politicians. This certainly is understandable given the poor results delivered by so many of them during their time in office. The term does apply to Gov. Nathan Deal and Columbia County Commission Chairman Ron Cross.

Deal was elected in 2010 during the still-dark days of the recession that began in 2008. He is now retiring after two terms, having guided Georgia through tumultuous budget cuts that saw significant but necessary reductions in education and other spending. Unlike the federal budget, Georgia must balance income and expenditures and the Governor and the legislature did so. Once the economy recovered, the cuts were restored, especially to education where more than 50 percent of tax receipts are expended.

Another hallmark of Deal’s tenure was Georgia being recognized as the No. 1 state for business in the country for six straight years. It’s not hard to imagine how this leads to growth of existing businesses and the attraction of new businesses, which inures to the benefit of all of its citizens.
