Editorial: Another day, another cyber success

Just this past December, the metro Augusta area’s youth cyber-education program was named the nation’s 15th and newest CyberPatriot Center of Excellence.

The came Monday’s announcement: The Fort Gordon Cyber District / Alliance for Cyber Education has been selected the 2018-2019 CyberPatriot Center of Excellence of the Year.

We’re not surprised it earned the honor. We just weren’t expecting it to arrive this quickly.

CyberPatriot is a national youth cyber education program that directs participating students toward STEM careers – jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Cybersecurity is emphasized heavily. CyberPatriot teams from different schools nationwide compete against one another to see how effectively they can solve mock cybersecurity problems. California and San Antonio are hotspots, so to speak, for the best CyberPatriot programs because of the areas’ massive cyber presence in business, industry and academia.

So you can tell how Augusta would fit right in. The U.S. Army Cyber Command is settling in at Fort Gordon. The new Georgia Cyber Center downtown on Reynolds Street is fostering cybersecurity education, training and research opportunities for both the public and private sectors.
