Teams from Augusta-area schools test skills in CyberPatriot competition

Students at Aiken, Richmond, and Columbia County high schools and middles schools competed in the state round competitions Friday.

Students in Aiken, Columbia and Richmond Counties skipped the schoolwork Friday and tested their cyber skills against schools around the country.

The students were competing in CyberPatriot, a National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air Force Association. This year is the first that Richmond and Aiken county schools created teams for the competition.

The schools are participating through Sunday in the state round competition for a chance to compete in the semifinals, which will be held Feb. 1-3.

At North Augusta High School, naval science teacher Ken Beck mentors two teams, one with three members and another with four. The students range from ninth to 12th grade and share an interest in computers and technology.
